Mount Driskill, Louisiana
In the Piney Woods of North Louisiana, northwest of Winnfield, the birthplace of Huey P. Long, towers Louisiana's highest peak, the dreaded Mount Driskill.
At a staggering 535 feet above sea level, this "Everest of the Bayou State" beckons both the bold and the foolhardy to challenge its treacherous east face.
Without Sherpa guides, nor the benefit of oxygen bottles, the brave members of the Louisiana Hiking Club, lead by their fearless President, Elisa Tubbs, answered the call of adventure on New Year's day, 2001.
The Nac was there as a key member of the expedition team, and official "Honest Lawyer" to ensure Club compliance with all state and federal regulations.
On New Year's Eve, the expedition dined at Don's Cajun Kitchen in Lecompte before establishing a base camp at Cloud Crossing campground on the icy banks of Saline Bayou.
Four inches of snow and 20 degree temperatures greeted the team that night as they rang in the real new millennium with a pot luck dinner and a roaring fire.
Early New Year's day, the expedition team conquered the wintry ascent in record time, leaving a testimonial on the mountaintop, notarized by Nac, to stand as witness to their determination and skill.
